Kenneth Ray Prater, 68 of Checotah, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2025, in Tulsa. He was born Sunday, October 10, 1956, to Donal and Geneva (Davis) Prater in Muskogee, OK. Kenneth grew up in the Pierce/Checotah area, graduating from Checotah High School in 1974. He attended Connors State, then went to work for ODOT, where he worked for almost 34 years.
Kenneth was a member of the Checotah Roundup Club and was on the board of directors for a time. Some of his rodeo accolades include CRRA Champion for 9 years, runner-up for 4 years between 1985-1997 and UPRA Hall of Fame, Class of 2023. Kenneth also had 2 horses that won Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Checotah. Kenneth will be missed by all that loved and knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donal Prater.
Kenneth is lovingly survived by his son, Cody Prater and wife Ashley of Roland; his daughter, Cassidy Crissman and husband Colby of Checotah; his grandchildren, Kenlee Rhoades, London Prater, Asher Gorham, Declan Crissman, Ella Gorham, Kai-Noah Prater and Colter Crissman; his mother, Geneva Prater; his sister, Jo Prater Rosser and husband Ben and their son Scott and wife Jennifer, their children, Jacy and daughter Cece; Allyson, Gavin and Ella; his loving companion Teresa Vreugdenhil and her children, Tony Masiero and his wife BreAnne, their children, Zoey Isabella; Samantha Foulkes and her child Teagen; and Lindi Masiero. He is also survived by other extended family and a lifetime of friends.
Viewing will be 9:00am-6:00pm, with family greeting friends from 4:00pm-6:00pm, Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Garrett Family Funeral Home Checotah. Services will be 10:00am, Thursday, August 21, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Checotah with Pastor Mike Bush and Pastor Ed Rutherford ministering. Burial to follow at Pierce Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Serving as Casket Bearers are John Riddle, Steve Davis, Mitch Davis, Ben Rosser, Tony Masiero and Scott Rosser. Honorary Casket Bearers are Jim Mudd, Jimmy Taylor, Sam Duvall, Spud Duvall, Gary Asbill, Kirby Brumble, Eddie Bell and Marty Ross.
