Obituary for Dolores Y. Walters
She was born July 21, 1937, in Valley Mills, Texas, to Clifford and Hazel Julia (Williams) Cagle.
Dolores was a proud Okmulgee High School graduate from the class of 1955. She dedicated her career to Okmulgee Public Schools working in the school system for over 30 years. She married Virgil Eugene Walters, April 21, 1957, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
A lifelong lover of books and learning, she could often be found in her favorite place—the library—reading, solving puzzles, or sharing stories with friends. She was a proud member of the Friends of the Library, and her commitment to literacy and learning touched many lives.
Her passion for community extended far beyond the library walls. A faithful volunteer, she was an active member of her Sunday school class for many years, sharing her faith and compassion with younger generations. She also gave her time generously at Baptist Village helping with their library.
She was a dedicated fan of the Texas Rangers, she also had a special place in her heart for Okmulgee sports, proudly supporting her local teams and celebrating their achievements with true hometown pride.
Among her many unique talents was a lifelong love of square dancing on roller skates—a joy she carried well into her later years, delighting everyone who watched her graceful moves and youthful spirit.
She will be remembered not only for her dedication and generosity, but for the quiet joy she brought to everyday life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford Cagle and Hazel (Cagle) Derrick, Virgil, her beloved husband, sister, Virginia Cagle, and twin sister Doris Kay, her brother, Coleman Cagle.
She is survived by three beloved sons, Virgil (Gene) Walters and wife Starla, Kerry Walters, and son James Walters, 11 grandchildren, Tara Walters, Chris Walters and wife Laura, Sterling Brown and wife Bethanie, Jake Walters, Scott Walters, Robert Walters, Austin Walters and wife Tierra, Tyler Walters, Tanner Large, Kelsi Cook, and Kylie Large, two sisters, Annette Flowers of Indiana and Rose Hammond of Edmond, Oklahoma, and 8 great grandchildren.
Visitation for Dolores will be on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, from 1:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M., at McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Services will be Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 1:00 P.M., at the First Baptist Church in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, with Dr. Dennis Taylor officiating.
Casket bearers will be Robert Walters, Chris Walters, Sterling Brown, Austin Walters, Tyler Walters, Jake Walters, Scott Walters, and Tanner Large. Interment will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery.
Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Okmulgee Education Foundation for the Gene Walters Math Scholarship or the Shriner’s Hospital.
